The 110th annual celebration of the Feast of the Assumption, so significant in the religious life of Catholics, will be held August 14-17 in Cleveland’s Little Italy. Bearing the semblance of a street fair, this holiday has been an important part of Italian life since ancient times. This celebration of faith unites church, retailers, neighbors and friends in a gathering that also honors tradition, heritage and community.

Little Italy’s Holy Rosary Pastor, Philip Racco, explained that the feast opens on Thursday, August 14, at 6 p.m. On the following day, August 15, after 10 o’clock Mass, Bishop Richard G. Lennon will lead the outdoor religious stop-and-go procession honoring the Madonna through neighborhood streets. “Our procession is an act of faith in a belief that when the Virgin Mary died she was assumed, body and soul into heaven, by the Risen Jesus, her son,” said Father Racco.

The annual Candlelight Procession will precede the closing of the festivities on Sunday evening, August 17, beginning at 9:30 p.m. followed by a fireworks display. “A procession is different than a parade. A parade comes to an end. A procession is an act of faith that states life’s journey will only be complete when we return to the Lord and experience God’s goodness in and through Christ Jesus. It is a public expression of faith,” said Father Racco.

Throughout the four feast days, exceptional food prepared by parishioners at moderate prices will be served in the Holy Rosary Churchyard, where there will also be continuous entertainment and carnival rides.

Elsewhere throughout the entire length of Mayfield Road, food and arts and crafts vendors will offer their specialties.

The Little Italy Feast of the Assumption draws more than 100,000 people each year. Admission is free!

RINOMATA FESTA DELL'ASSUNZIONE A CLEVELAND

Si festeggia quest’anno la 110a edizione della Festa dell’Assunzione, avvenimento significativo per i Cattolici, dal 14 al 17 agosto presso la Little Italy di Cleveland.  Simile ad un festival all’aperto, quest’incontro annuale ha ricoperto un ruolo importante nella vita degli Italiani sin dall’inizio.  La festa religiosa unisce infatti chiesa, commercianti, vicini ed amici in una riunione che onora tradizione, patrimonio culturale e comunità.

Padre Philip Racco, della Chiesa Holy Rosary di Little Italy, ha spiegato che la festa si aprirà giovedì, 14 agosto, alle 18.00.  Venerdì, 15 agosto, dopo la messa delle 10.00 il Vescovo Richard G. Lennon condurrà la processione in onore della Madonna per le circostanti vie.  “La nostra processione è un atto di fede che si basa sulla credenza che quando la Vergine Maria morì fu assunta, in corpo e anima, in cielo da suo figlio Gesù Cristo Risorto,” ha spiegato Padre Racco.

Domenica, 17 agosto alle 21.30 la processione a lume di candela precederà la chiusura dei festeggiamenti, seguita da fuochi d’artificio.  “Una processione è diversa da una sfilata.  Mentre la sfilata ha sempre una fine, la processione è un atto di fede che dimostra che il nostro viaggio esistenziale sarà completo solamente quando ritorneremo dal Signore e avremo prova della bontà di Dio in ed attraverso Gesù Cristo.  È un’espressione pubblica di fede,” ha continuato Padre Racco. 

Durante le quattro giornate di festa, diversi piatti prelibati saranno preparati e serviti dai parrocchiani presso la Holy Rosary Church a prezzi modici dove saranno anche presenti giostre e spettacoli vari.

Mayfield Road ospiterà stands con specialità di rosticceria, articoli artigianali, e creazioni artistiche. La Festa dell’Assunzione di Little Italy attira oltre 100.000 persone ogni anno.  L’ingresso è gratuito!
