Eataly e‘ sicuramente un posto magico dove cultura ed informazione si uniscono al piacere della buona cucina; Eataly e‘ un posto da non perdere!

The recently opened Eataly is a unique culinary concept and experience, creating an authentic Italian encounter in New York City's Flatiron District. Restaurateurs Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich and Lidia Bastianich have partnered with Oscar Farinetti in opening this sister establishment to Farinetti's original premier food and wine marketplace located in Turin, Italy.

With an emphasis on Italian authenticity, Mario Batali not only wants you to come in and enjoy eating in the restaurants, but to also be able to buy the freshest ingredients, so you can go home and then make the same meals yourselves. Everything that is cooked in the restaurants is available for purchase in the retail store.

Open seven days a week, Eataly's mission is to "celebrate and foster understanding of the Italian table." With a commitment to authenticity, Eataly embraces the Slow Food concept, which stresses traditional, regional and sustainable food. Slow Food will as a strategic consultant, to control and verify the quality and safety of the food, and insuring that quality not be compromised by the producers.

Described by Mario Batali as "a giant retail store, inside of which are four or five," Eataly, with 50,000 square feet of space, is a true experience. It features a market where you can buy handmade mozzarella and Prosciutto di Parma, a house wares section with high design items like Bialetti espresso makers, a bookstore featuring Italian cookbooks, a 1,500-square foot wine shop carrying 1,000 bottles of Italian wines, a travel agency to plan trips to Italy, a cooking school, and an Italian bank ATM. There are no less than seven dining venues, including a coffee bar, and in January, La Birreria, a 300-seat rooftop beer garden and brewery will be open.

So that Eataly does not overwhelm, you are given a flyer with a map and instructions for finding the various sections and restaurants. Most of the restaurants operate on a first come first served basis, and have counter seating as well as tables. There is a central seating point close to the book store, where you can put your name on a list for a table.

A casual stand-up food and drink bar called La Piazza serves beer and wine, salamis and cheeses. Il Pesce restaurant serves Italian seafood and has a raw bar. Le Verdure restaurant, catering to vegetarians, serves soups, bruschettas, and warm and cold meals.

La Pizza, operated by Rossopomodoro of Naples, serves 10" individual pizzas baked in wood ovens from Italy, and made by pizzaiolas from Naples. There is also a takeout window on 24th Street. La Pizza shares a counter seating and table area with La Pasta, where you can enjoy pasta dishes made with your choice of dried or fresh pastas.

Il Manzo is the only restaurant requiring reservations, and this is the more formal style steakhouse/meat restaurant in Eataly. Il Manzo serves raw ground beef, a popular entrée choice in Italy.

If you would like take-away food, Eataly has separate food counters including Panini, Rosticceria and Focaccia. For lovers of all things dolci, there is the Pasticceria, where fresh pastries and cakes are made daily, the Gelateria, all made fresh every day, and Café Lavazza, serving pastries, espresso, cappuccinos, and other delights.

La Scuola di Eataly opened its doors to students on October 7, with Chef Lidia Bastianich as dean. She is the best-selling author of six Italian cookbooks, the star of her own television cooking show, and an accomplished restaurateur of four restaurants in New York City.

The cooking school currently offers six different classes priced from $25-$175, and in January, a full class schedule will be available. Classes accommodate up to 24 students, providing for an interactive experience between students and guest chef lecturers. To register, call 212-539-0204 ext. 304.

Originating in Turin, Eataly also has Italian locations in Bologna, Milano, and Asti, and one in Tokyo. The NYC location is in the heart of Manhattan, across from Madison Square Park, at 200 5th Avenue between 23rd and 24th Street. The owners anticipate serving four to six million customers a year.
