La Gazzetta Italiana began publication in May of 1992 to meet the growing demand by the Italian American community in the Greater Cleveland area for an Italian American newspaper. The publication's primary objectives at that time were to not only recognize our proud Italian heritage, traditions and culture but also to disseminate recent news, upcoming social events and local achievements.
Editor Paul Sciria has been with La Gazzetta Italiana since its birth. He relates that a major faux pas was made with the first issue when the printer inadvertently set the type showing a date of May 1991 when, in fact, the year was 1992. From the onset our Editor received continuous encouragement and support from Northeast Ohio's Italian American community. La Gazzetta Italiana quickly became the leading Italian American newspaper in Northeast Ohio.
The newspaper has grown from 20 to 44 pages and circulation has expanded from Northeast Ohio to all parts of Ohio and other populous states throughout the nation. Growing numbers of Italian American club members are loyal subscribers. And a number of Ohio high schools with Italian studies programs have taken advantage of a special program that affords their students the opportunity to receive La Gazzetta Italiana on a monthly basis throughout the school year. In addition, business support has increased significantly and the Internet is now being used for informational and promotional purposes. Editor Paul Sciria attributes much of this success to PAS Publishing Co., who took over ownership of the newspaper in January 2000.
La Gazzetta Italiana focuses on the contributions of Italian Americans typically overlooked by major newspapers and magazines while providing a forum through which our proud culture can flourish from generation to generation. Our 44-page newspaper features:
