Madeline Anderson, a student minoring in Italian Studies at Lake Erie College, attended my course on Italian Literature and Conversation in spring 2018. Her final project was on Susanna Tamaro’s “Un cuore pensante.” “Un cuore pensante” (a heart that is thinking) was published in Italy in 2015. It is a philosophical autobiography, a profound meditation on our modern life. Madeline wrote her work in both Italian and English and presented it in class in Italian. She reflected on the meaning of identity, of the self, on the concept of person in modern times. She concluded her presentation with these words: "We are all unique and have a special way of expressing ourselves. But we have forgotten to challenge ourselves on this continuous path to awareness that we call life…"
