NIAF and Iconic Producer De Laurentiis Launch Film Prizes for Aspiring Filmmakers

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has partnered with legendary Italian producer Aurelio De Laurentiis to establish an exciting new grant program for emerging filmmakers. Officially titled the NIAF/De Laurentiis Film Prizes, this initiative provides critical funding and mentorship to support the next generation of creative talents looking to tell compelling stories about the Italian or Italian American experience.

Nephew of the famous Italian film producer Dino De Laurentiis, Aurelio De Laurentiis is an internationally renowned cinematic icon who has produced over 400 films since entering the industry in the 1970s. He founded the prolific film production company FilmAuro and currently serves as chairman of the prominent Italian football club S.S.C. Napoli. Lauded as one of Italy’s most successful producers, De Laurentiis’ repertoire spans across genres from drama to comedy and includes acclaimed works directed by Carlo Verdone, Ettore Scola, Ridley Scott, David Cronenberg, Luc Besson, Paul Haggis, Joel and Ethan Coen, David Lynch, Roberto Benigni and many others. Additionally, he has been a member of the NIAF Board of Directors since 2022.

By partnering with De Laurentiis, NIAF is providing filmmakers with a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This collaboration exemplifies NIAF and De Laurentiis’ shared commitment to nurturing cinematic genius and bringing culturally resonant stories to the screen.

Through the NIAF/De Laurentiis Film Prizes, five applicants will be selected annually to receive a $10,000 production grant. Grantees can utilize these funds to produce documentary, narrative, fiction, and nonfiction films that capture the richness of Italian or Italian American culture. Whether delving into little-known history, shining light on contemporary community issues, or exploring family traditions, these grants empower filmmakers to share impactful stories that educate and inspire.

The award-winning shorts will premiere at NIAF’s Gala Weekend in Washington D.C., in October of 2025. The best overall film will be announced at the Gala dinner, where the winning filmmaker will be awarded an additional $10,000 cash prize plus an exclusive mentorship opportunity with De Laurentiis and his team. There is no greater career boost for a hopeful director, writer, or producer than the chance to learn from a master like De Laurentiis firsthand.

For any filmmaker passionate about elevating Italian and/or Italian American narratives, the NIAF/De Laurentiis Film Prizes represent the opportunity of a lifetime. All prospective applicants from around the world are encouraged to apply for consideration by the March 1st deadline. Full eligibility, guidelines and the online application are available at NIAF.org. Don’t miss this chance to bring your cinematic vision to reality!
