Music and food combine for a molto Italiano Valentine’s Day experience on February 13, 2025 at Music Box Supper Club.
Embracing your lover as you glide down Venice’s Grand Canal. Sitting side-by-side raising a toast to a golden Tuscan sunset. A goodnight kiss on the balcony of a seaside villa in Cinque Terre. All are lovely ways to make this Valentine’s Day one to remember. But if you can’t celebrate the holiday in Italy, Alla Boara will bring the romance and beauty of Italy to you on February 13 at the Music Box Supper Club with music that combines the emotion and passion of Italian folk song with the sophistication of jazz.
The performance will be the first in Cleveland since the band returned from recording sessions for their third album in Los Angeles with multiple Grammy nominee Tyler Chester (Sara Bareilles, Jackson Browne, Blake Mills, Andrew Bird and others).
“Los Angeles was an incredible experience,” said founder and percussionist Anthony Taddeo. “Working with a producer like Tyler really brought out the best we have to offer. We’re playing on a new level of creativity and passion, and we’re excited to put this music out into the world.”
That “new level” is a logical next step for Alla Boara, even following a 2024 that began with an extensive tour of the northeast U.S. and Canada and ended with a Christmas concert in Trinity Cathedral that AllAboutJazz.com said, “brought the sun of the Mezzogiorno to the bleak midwinter of the Great Lakes.”
In between, Alla Boara recorded three videos including one that captured a thrilling concert at City Church in Cleveland Heights that combined the band with a woodwind ensemble playing arrangements of some of their beloved material. These included work song, “Almond Sorters,” the slyly comic “Mamma Mia Dammi Cento Lire” and the poignant lullaby “Som Som”. Look for these and more to be on the program at the Music Box.
When he was studying in New York with legendary Miles Davis collaborator Jimmy Cobb, Taddeo encountered a little-known archive of field recordings made in Italy by the folklorist Alan Lomax in the 1950s. Taddeo was so moved by the power of these folk songs, many of which are now forgotten, that he arranged for the versatile and skilled musicians of Alla Boara.
Guitarist Dan Bruce is a recording artist in his own right with his fusion-minded Ohn! Trio and was a longtime fixture on the Chicago scene. Bassist Ian Kinnaman and accordionist Mark Micchelli are part of a rising generation of young players enlivening the scene. The declamatory fervor of Tommy Lehman’s fiery, jazz-inflected trumpet adds a celebratory note to the ensemble while vocalist Amanda Powell is the band’s secret weapon. An operatic soprano who is a mainstay of programs and recordings by the internationally acclaimed Apollo’s Fire chamber ensemble, Powell’s command of the Italian language brings thrilling immediacy and sovereign authority to her performances.
It is all part of Alla Boara’s mission says founder and percussionist Anthony Taddeo. “The heart of what we do is connecting people and creating new relationships. Folk music unites people, and it connects with the everyday person. And what could be more Italian than combining music with great food?”
