Pope Francis has beatified John Paul I, the happy and humble pontiff known as “the smiling pope”, whose death after just 33 days as leader of the world’s Roman Catholics gave rise to decades of speculation and rumor. At a ceremony in St Peter’s Square in September, which marked the last formal step before canonization, Francis praised John Paul I’s brief but cheerful papacy. “With a smile, Pope John Paul managed to communicate the goodness of the Lord,” he said during mass. “How beautiful is a church with a happy, serene and smiling face, that never closes doors, never hardens hearts, never complains or harbors resentment, does not grow angry or impatient, does not look dour or suffer nostalgia for the past.” Seated under a canopy outside St Peter’s Basilica, Francis led the proceedings, which were punctuated by thunder, lightning and rain, prompting cardinals, bishops, the choir and thousands of rank-and-file faithful to open umbrellas. Born Albino Luciani on Oct. 17 1912, in the northern Italian town of Canale d’Agordo, John Paul I went on to become patriarch of Venice, cardinal and then the head of the Roman Catholic church. Luciani, who took the name John Paul after being elected pope on Aug. 26, 1978, was found dead in bed at his Vatican apartment on Sept. 28 of that year. Although the Vatican said he died of a heart attack, it gave conflicting versions as to the circumstances in which his body was discovered. Despite initially claiming he had been found by a priest who served as his secretary, it later acknowledged he had been found dead by one of the nuns who used to bring him his morning coffee. Given the huge financial scandal developing at the time in Italy involving figures who had links to the Vatican’s bank, suspicions quickly took root in the secular media that John Paul had perhaps been poisoned because he intended to tackle wrongdoing. Books speculating on the circumstances surrounding his death sold millions of copies. “Let us pray, in his own words: ‘Lord take me as I am, with my defects, with my shortcomings, but make me become what you want me to be,’” Francis said. The pope added that John Paul lived “without compromise” and had also “conquered the temptation” to put himself “at the center or to seek glory.” Francis advanced John Paul along the path to sainthood last year after crediting him with interceding in the miraculous healing of a child in 2011.

A una cerimonia un mese fa nella Basilica di San Pietro a Roma, Papa Francesco ha elogiato Papa Giovanni anche se per pochi giorni fu un leader. La cerimonia era l’ultimo passo prima di diventare santo. Papa Francesco nella sua orazione ha affermato che Papa Giovanni ebbe la capacità di comunicare la parola di Dio semplicemente e con gioia. Ha ammesso che la Chiesa Cattolica è come un volto gioioso che non chiude mai le porte, non dimentica mai il cuore della gente, si lamenta per prima ma non tiene mai risentimento, e mai diventa né arrabbiata né impaziente. La cerimonia è finita presto perché c’è stato un temporale. Papa Giovanni Paolo I nacque col nome di Albino Luciani il 17 ottobre 1912 nel nord Italia. Fu il patriarca di Venezia, cardinale, e poi papa. Luciani prese il nome Giovanni Paolo quando divenne papa il 26 agosto 1978. Il 28 settembre 1978, fu trovato morto nel suo letto da un infarto. Furono altri ufficiali che dissero che il papa fu avvelenato. In un primo momento, la Chiesa dichiarò che un prete trovò il Papa morto ma in seguito la Chiesa ammisse che fu una suora e non un prete. In quel periodo, lo scandalo con la banca Vaticana fece sorgere il sospetto che il Papa fu assassinato perché volesse indagare sulle finanze della Chiesa. Ci sono tanti libri che spiegano lo scandalo ed i sospetti della morte. Papa Francesco ha detto una preghiera durante la cerimonia che chiedeva a Dio di perdonare i nostri peccati e di aiutarci a diventare le persone che dobbiamo essere agli occhi di Dio. Papa Francesco vuole che Papa Giovanni sia rispettato come santo dopo aver riconosciuto (nel 2011) il miracolo di aver curato un bambino malato.
