Pope Francis has called for the English wording of the Lord’s Prayer to be changed because it implies God “induces temptation.” The prayer asks God to “lead us not into temptation.” The pontiff told Italian broadcasters he believed the wording should be altered to better reflect that it was not God who led humans to sin. “A father doesn’t do that; a father helps you to get up immediately. It’s Satan who leads us into temptation, that’s his department.” The 80-year-old also highlighted that the Catholic church in France had adapted the prayer, and uses the phrase “do not let us fall into temptation” instead.

Il testo in italiano della preghiera più nota, il “Padre Nostro”, potrebbe presto cambiare. A farlo intendere è lo stesso Papa Francesco: “Dio che ci induce in tentazione non è una buona traduzione”. Il pontefice ha spiegato ad un giovane cappellano nell’introduzione di una puntata di un programma televisivo che il testo dovrebbe essere cambiato per riflettere con maggiore chiarezza che ad indurre gli uomini in tentazione non è Dio. “Sono io a cadere, non è  lui che mi butta nella tentazione per poi vedere come sono caduto. Un padre non fa questo, un padre aiuta ad alzarsi subito. Quello che ti induce in tentazione è Satana, quello è l’ufficio di Satana.” Il Pontefice ha fatto notare che i francesi hanno modificato il testo con una traduzione che dice “non mi lasci cadere nella tentazione”.
