One of Leonardo da Vinci’s earliest paintings, the “Benois Madonna” also known as the “Madonna and Child with Flowers,” will make a rare return to Italy in honor of the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death. On loan from the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg where it has hung for most of the past 100 years, the painting will be on display first in the town art gallery in Fabriano in the Marche region in June and then will move to the Umbrian National Gallery in Perugia for the month of July. Da Vinci is thought to be around 25-years-old when he painted the intimate portrait. The exhibit is one of hundreds of special events in Italy throughout the year to mark the anniversary.

Uno dei primi dipinti di Leonardo da Vinci, la “Madonna di Benois”, noto anche come “Madonna col Bambino con fiori”, farà un raro rientro in Italia in onore del 500° anniversario della morte dell’artista. In prestito dal Museo dell’Ermitage di San Pietroburgo, dove è esposto da circa 100 anni, il dipinto sarà visibile per la prima volta nella Galleria d’Arte Comunale di Fabriano, nelle Marche a giugno, per poi essere trasferito nella Galleria Nazionale Umbra a Perugia per tutto il mese di luglio. Si pensa che Da Vinci avesse circa 25 anni quando dipinse l’opera. La mostra è uno di centinaia di eventi speciali che si terranno in Italia nel corso dell’anno per celebrare questo importante anniversario.
