A painting stolen by Nazi troops from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence in 1943 is being returned to the museum by a German family which had it in its possession for years. In January, Uffizi director Eike Schmidt said that Germany had a “moral duty” to help bring the painting back to the Italian museum. After originally citing a statute of limitations as the reason they would not get involved, the German government contacted the unidentified family that inherited the painting. The family originally requested a 2-million-euro payment for the painting earlier this year, which was denied by the Uffizi. No details of the agreement reached between the German government and the family have been released. The “Vase of Flowers” was painted by Dutch master Jan van Huysum and was first displayed in Florence in 1824. It is estimated to be worth millions of euros.

Un dipinto rubato dalle truppe naziste alla Galleria degli Uffizi a Firenze nel 1943 è stato restituito al museo da una famiglia tedesca che l’aveva in suo possesso da anni. A gennaio, il direttore di Uffizi Eike Schmidt aveva dichiarato che la Germania aveva il  “dovere morale” di contribuire a riportare il dipinto al museo italiano. Dopo aver originariamente citato uno statuto di limitazioni come scusa per rimanere estaneo alla discussione, il governo tedesco ha infine contattato la famiglia (non meglio identificata) che aveva ereditato il dipinto. Non sono stati resi noti i dettagli dell’accordo raggiunto tra il governo tedesco e la famiglia che aveva inizialmente chiesto un pagamento di 2 milioni di euro per la restitizione, rifiutato dagli Uffizi. Il “Vaso di fiori” fu dipinto dal maestro olandese Jan van Huysum ed esposto per la prima volta a Firenze nel 1824. Si stima che valga milioni di euro.
