Positano is a picturesque and charming town located near Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi, and Ravello on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Famous for its magnificent cliffside views, Positano has been featured in major motion pictures like “Only You” (1994) and “Under the Tuscan Sun” (2003). However, the beauty does not just lie in the spectacular scenery along the Mediterranean Sea, but also within the people you meet in the town. There is a sense of warmth in the narrow streets that are adorned with lemons, bougainvillea flowers and local artistry. The town is small enough to walk everywhere, and there is little need for transportation. Additionally, the town is very casual – from the small cafes to the cute shops. You will find one-of-a-kind treasures such as beautiful handmade ceramics, lemon fragrances and chic lace clothing. If you are creating an Italy itinerary, this is a must see city. When there, you might consider enjoying breathtaking panoramic views from the San Pietro hotel, celebrating mass at Santa Maria Assunta Catholic church or stopping for a gelato along the beach. Whatever you choose, you will not be disappointed.
In order to get to Positano, first you have the option of flying into one of two cities: Naples or Rome. While Naples International Airport is only approximately a one hour drive from Positano, there are no direct flights from the Cleveland area. Instead, you will have a connection and change of aircrafts in both the U.S. and a European city. However, you can find direct flights to Naples from New York on select airlines. Rome International Airport (Fiumincino) is the second option to consider, as there are plenty of direct international flights that arrive each day. The drive from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is nearly 3.5 hours, but it allows you more flexibility with flight schedules.
There are many wonderful places to stay in Positano, but you should know, Italian hotels are not like American hotels. Instead, they are quaint and resemble a bed & breakfast. Within Positano, you will find an array of options to satisfy your travel needs. From boutique to five-star luxury, many hotels are in close proximity to all the town’s main attractions. There’s no better feeling than enjoying the sights of the coast from your hotel, whether soaking up the sun poolside or having breakfast on a terrace.
Positano is truly a place for you to relax and to enjoy the simpler pace of life. This unforgettable town is a piece of paradise that will stay in your heart forever – just ask anyone that has ever been! In the words of author John Steinbeck (Harper's Bazaar, 1953) "Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone."
