Many Italian immigrants were in regular contact with their families and others back home. The need to maintain strong ties with the old country and support family members prompted them to send money, either by including dollars with their correspondence or, in the case of large funds, by wiring money to Italy. 

Thus, immigrants in America made their presence felt back home. They also accomplished this by funding church construction, sacred artwork, masses, and festivals. Here we have three sisters from Montelongo, Campobasso confirming that money received from family members in Ohio will be used to support the town’s Saint Rocco festival.

Dear Aunt Maria,

We delivered the five scude [a dialect word used for dollars] for Saint Rocco’s festival, and we also prayed for you and for your dear husband. We always (have the Church) celebrate a mass for him. May the Lord always protect you, dear Aunt. We’re happy that you and Aunt Lucia love each other. She always talks about you.

Yesterday we received your letter. We’re happy that you’re in good health. We are well, but Rita suffers from rheumatism. We received the money for Saint Rocco.    We received your letter and we’re happy that you are well. We have already given the dollars you sent to the committee in charge of organizing Saint Rocco’s feast on August 20. We prayed and still pray for you and for your family. We received the packages. We were very happy but we are sorry that you’re concerned about this. After the holidays, we’ll send you a package with the black cherry preserves. Uncle Rocco hasn’t been very well and Aunt Rosina too, but now they’re well.
