Anne Miceli of University Lodge died unexpectedly on St. Joseph’s Day, March 20. Her death left me very sad as we were friends for more than 50 years.
Anne endured many heartaches during her life. She buried two daughters a few years apart. She was the devoted wife of the late Al DeMichael and John Miceli, mother to six children, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and the sister of Gloria Canata and Bill D’Amico.
Anne was a friendly, gentle woman who dearly loved her family. God blessed Anne with many talents. She crocheted a wedding dress for one of her daughters and sewed another daughter’s gown along with the bridesmaids’ dresses. She also sewed vestments for her son, Fr. John Miceli, who is Pastor of St. Marks Church in Cleveland. Anne was well-traveled, having been to Italy many times and, at the age of 80, accompanied her son, Fr. John, to Africa. I’ll never forget how she laughed when telling me about a giraffe who stuck his head in an open window of the house where she was staying. No fear whatsoever, she thought he was so cute!
Anne spent many years compiling her family’s genealogy. I sang in two Italian Choral groups with Anne and her late husband John. We were so proud to wear our handmade Italian costumes and sing our beautiful Italian songs! She was a lady of many interests; always doing something whether it be reading, canning, cooking, sewing, or you name it.
My warmest memory of Anne is when my husband died and the Miceli’s invited me to their Florida home. They treated me like a sister with their kind hospitality; cooking for me and showing me the beautiful Florida sights.
Blessed with 92 years of life, Anne enjoyed a full life with many happy, good times with her family and many friends. I just wish she was still with us.
Her funeral Mass, celebrated by her son, Fr. John, and co-celebrated by seven other priests was held in a filled church, a tribute to this special lady. Fr. John’s eulogy to his loving mother was humorous and moving. REST IN PEACE, DEAR FRIEND, you will be missed.
