An ancient Roman marble portrait head of Drusus Minor has been returned to a museum near Naples. It was stolen in 1944 from an Italian museum and purchased by the Cleveland Museum of Art from the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona in 2012. They believed they had clear title. Italy’s Minister of Fine Arts praised the Cleveland Museum of Art for its full cooperation. The artwork was discovered by Italian archaeologists in the early 1900s near Naples. Also found at the time was the marble portrait head of Roman Emperor Tiberius. The Drusus head had been in the Cleveland Museum of Art gallery for five years.

Grazie a un accordo siglato tra il Cleveland Museum of Art ed il Mibact, la famosa statua in marmo che raffigura la testa di Druso Minore, datata I secolo A.C, ritornerà a Napoli. La scultura, venduta nel 2004 in un’asta pubblica a Parigi era stata acquista dal Museo nel 2012. All’inizio si pensava che provenisse dal nord Africa, ma dopo numerose ricerche ed una volta venuto a conoscenza che probabilmente era stata trafugata nel 1944, il Museo ha ritenuto opportuno restituirla all’Italia. La scultura era stata inizialmente rinvenuta nei primi del ‘900 insieme ad un ritratto dell’Imperatore Tiberio durante scavi archeologici condotti nei pressi della città pertenopea. Il Ministro Franceschini ha elogiato la piena collaborazione dei vertici del Museo di Cleveland con le autorità italiane.
