An Italian fugitive who escaped from prison near Rome in 1979 after being convicted of being a member of a gang remains free in Brazil. Cesare Battisti, now 62, spent more than three decades on the run in Mexico and France. Battisti was also convicted for his part in four murders blamed on an armed Marxist group active in Italy in the 1970s. In October, Battisti was stopped at the western border of Brazil by police who claimed he failed to declare he was carrying approximately $1,600 and 1,300 euros. The judge ordering his detention said the Italian appeared “to be attempting to flee from the national territory out of fear that he will be extradited” to Italy. However, subsequently, a judge ordered his release. In 2009, Brazil’s Supreme Court had authorized his extradition, but this was blocked in 2010 by then leftist president da Silva on his last day in office – infuriating Italy. Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano has said that he is currently working with Rome’s ambassador in Brazil to “bring Battisti back to Italy and hand him over to justice.”

Un latitante italiano evaso da una prigione nei pressi di Roma nel 1979 dopo essere stato condannato per appartenenza ad un gruppo terroristico, è stato scarcerato da un giudice  brasiliano. Cesare Battisti, ora 62 anni, ha trascorso più di tre decenni in fuga tra Messico e  Francia. Battisti è stato anche condannato per il suo ruolo in quattro omicidi di cui accusato un gruppo armato marxista attivo in Italia negli anni ‘70. Lo scorso ottobre Battisti è stato fermato ed arrestato al confine occidentale del Brasile dalla polizia federale con l’accusa  di non aver dichiarato di avere addosso circa 1.600 dollari e 1.300 euro. Il giudice che ne ha ordinato l’arresto ha dichiarato che l’ex-militante sembrava “cercare di fuggire dal territorio nazionale per paura di essere estradato” in Italia. In seguito, tuttavia, un secondo giudice ha accolto la richiesta avanzata dagli avvocati della difesa, ordinandone la scarcerazione. Nel 2009 la Corte Suprema del Brasile aveva autorizzato l’estradizione di Battisti, che fu però  bloccata nel 2010 dall’allora presidente di sinistra da Silva durante il suo ultimo giorno in carica, scatenando le ire delle autorità italiane. Il ministro degli Esteri Angelino Alfano ha affermato che sta attivamente lavorando con la nostra Ambasciata in Brasile per “riportare Battisti in Italia e consegnarlo alla giustizia”.
