Italy’s new Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that Russia should return to the G8 in one of his first foreign policy statements. Commenting from the G7 summit in Canada where the leaders of Italy, France, Germany, the UK, Japan, Canada, and the U.S. were gathered for top level talks, Conte tweeted, “I agree with President Trump: Russia should return to the G8. It’s in everybody’s interest.” President Trump had made his statement upon arriving to the G7 summit: “You know, whether you like it or not - and it may not be politically correct - but we have a world to run and in the G7, which used to be the G8, they threw Russia out. They should let Russia come back in.”

In una delle prime dichiarazioni pubbliche rilasciate in ambito di politica estera, il neopresidente del Consiglio Giuseppe Conte si è schierato a favore della riammissione della Russia tra i membri del G8. Commentando in occasione del recente summit dei G7 in Canada, dove i leader di Italia, Francia, Germania, Regno Unito, Giappone, Canada e Stati Uniti si sono riuniti per colloqui di alto livello, Conte,  l’unico tra i partecipanti a fare da sponda a Trump ha twittato: “Sono d’accordo con il presidente Trump: la Russia dovrebbe rientrare nel G8. È nell’interesse di tutti”. Da parte sua, il Presidente Trump lo aveva dichiarato ai cronisti alla partenza da Washington: “La Russia dovrebbe esserci, a questo incontro. Che vi piaccia o no, e può non essere politicamente corretto, ma abbiamo un mondo da gestire e nel G7, che un tempo era il G8, hanno cacciato la Russia. Dovrebbero farla rientrare, la Russia”.
