An Italian submarine accidentally sunk by a British warship during WWI has been found after more than 100 years. The ship was found off the coast of the small island of Capraia, north of Elba in the Tyrrhenian Sea by two Italian navy minesweepers taking part in a routine exercise in the area. The submarine named Alberto Guglielmotti was mistaken for German U-Boat in March of 2017. All 14 crew members on board died in the accident. “This discovery is testimony to the courage and dignity of these men who, more than 100 years ago, served their country and made the ultimate sacrifice,” the Italian navy said in a statement.

Un sottomarino italiano accidentalmente affondato da una nave da guerra britannica durante la Prima Guerra mondiale è stato rinvenuto dopo più di 100 anni al largo della costa della piccola isola di Capraia, a nord dell’Elba nel Mar Tirreno da due dragamine della Marina Italiana impegnate in una esercitazione di routine nella zona. Il sottomarino Alberto Guglielmotti fu scambiato per uno U-Boat tedesco nel marzo del 2017. Tutti i 14 membri dell’equipaggio a bordo perirono nell’incidente. “Questa scoperta testimonia il coraggio e la dignità di questi uomini che oltre 100 anni fa hanno servito il loro paese e pagato con la propria vita”, ha dichiarato in una nota la Marina Italiana.
