The Italian custom of drinking coffee quickly at the counter of your favorite coffee shop has been banned under the country’s strict coronavirus restrictions, but bar owners say it is time to restore this tradition. Struggling business owners say the “lifeblood” of their coffee shops is this very tradition and that the fact they are only able to serve customers at outdoor tables is not helping their business at all. “The ban on eating and drinking at the counter has no legal or health basis,” stated the business group Fipe-Confcommercio, which represents Italy’s bar and restaurant owners, according to La Repubblica. The government “should clarify once and for all that drinking a coffee and eating a cornetto at the counter is possible and, with the right social distancing, without risk.” The group demanded “an immediate intervention (by the government) to restore the possibility of eating and drinking at the counter,” something which had previously been allowed until a rule change in March.

I padroni dei bar, però, vogliono ricominciare questa tradizione culturale. Molti padroni hanno detto che l’espresso bevuto al banco è la cosa più popolare ai loro bar. Con le restrizioni, possono servire i client solo fuori il bar, e questo non è abbastanza per salvare i loro affari. Il gruppo Fipe-Confcommercio, che rappresenta i padroni dei bar e ristoranti in italia, ha detto che non esiste un rischio per le persone né quando mangiano né quando bevono a un banco al bar se i clienti mantengano una distanza di due metri. Hanno spiegato che le persone che appoggiano sul bancone mentre mangiano un cornetto e/o prendono un espresso con questa distanza sono sicure. Vogliono che il governo chiarisca questo. Il gruppo ha chiesto al governo anche di cambiare queste restrizioni immediatamente, specialmente perché era permesso a prendere l’espresso al banco finché una legge nuova che era approvata in marzo.
