You will need to present your passport. You will also need to present your birth certification. If this is not your first marriage you will need to certify the end of your earlier wedding. You and your witnesses must also assert before the Italian Consulate office in the USA that under the laws of your jurisdiction you have the legal right to marry. All documents must be rendered into Italian by a certified interpreter and certain written documents must have what is known as an Apostille Stamp from the Secretary of State in the state in which you are living. With all the paperwork in place it takes anywhere from three to four days to get permission to get married for a civil ceremony held at a town hall.

A Catholic religious ceremonial in Italy is possible but can be very difficult to arrange unless you have a civil ceremony first which can be done here in your local town. A catholic wedding in Italy is not so easy for strangers. If you wish to marry in a non-Catholic church it is virtually unattainable to do so without first getting a civil wedding license; it is highly recommended that you have a civil ceremonial first and a religious ceremony after. This is still true if you are attempting a Catholic ceremony. While it is possible for non-Italians to have a Catholic wedding ceremony in Italy, the number of priests who will conduct marriage ceremonies for non-Italians is small and the practice is frowned on. If you have your affection set on a Catholic ceremony it is certainly possible. You will need first to talk to your local priest or bishop to see if they know of a catholic church in Italy that is willing to perform your ceremony. The tour company that you are working with can also assist you in identifying a local catholic church that will perform the ceremony. At the very least you will need a formal letter on church letterhead from your local priest telling that you have completed all Pre Cana routines and further putting forward that your church gives license for the ceremony. It is also possible to marry at the Vatican in St. Peter's Basilica. There is a side chapel in the main church where wedding ceremonies are performed. However, there are many restrictions to be considered. Neither of the couple being married can have been married before nor can either have any children from either union or prior unions. Both must have been baptized, made first communion, confirmed, etc. Most churches charge a fee ranging from 500 to 900 Euros with an organist to perform the ceremony. There is a great deal of paperwork and preparation required for them and they request that you make a contribution for their church accordingly.
