Venice residents marched the streets in protest against tourist influx in July. With slogans such as “Mi no vado via (I’m not leaving)” and “My Future is Venice” locals showed their discontent in the city’s leadership. “In our opinion what needs to change, and fast, are the objectives of the local leadership which seem to be aiming only at exploiting Venice rather than building a sustainable, livable city for the Venetians and visitors to enjoy,” Valeria Duflot told The Local. Duflot co-founded Venezia Autentica, an organization which offers advice to tourists on how to visit the city without causing harm. The number of permanent residents in Venice is approaching a low of 50,000, half the number of 40 years ago and less than the number of tourists who flock there each day. Pollution from cruise ships, day-trip tourists spending their money in the souvenir shops versus the local artisanal shops which have played a vital role in the city’s culture and economy, littering, and vandalism all plight the city.

In corteo con striscioni come “Mi no vado via” (I’m not leaving) e “Il mio futuro è Venezia” (My future is Venice), i residenti hanno espresso la propria insoddisfazione nei confronti dell’attuale amministrazione comunale. “A nostro avviso, quello che deve cambiare e cambiare velocemente, sono gli obbiettivi perseguiti da Sindaco e giunta, che sembrano puntare solamente allo sfruttamento di Venezia piuttosto che a costruire una città sostenibile e vivibile sia per i veneziani che per i visitatori”, ha dichiarato Valeria Duflot a The Local. La Duflot è la co-fondatrice di Venezia Autentica, un’organizazione che offre ai turisti consigli su come visitare la città senza arrecarle danni. Il numero di residenti fissi a Venezia è sceso ad un minimo storico di circa 50.000, metà rispetto a circa 40 anni fa ed inferiore al numero giornaliero di arrivi di turisti. L’inquinamento atmosferico causato dal transito delle grandi navi da crociera nella laguna, la mancanza di negozi essenziali sostituiti da botteghe di paccottiglia a scapito del lavoro artigianale, il turismo mordi e fuggi che spesso non genera reddito, ma produce oneri, la sporcizia ed il vandalismo sono alcune della piaghe che affligono Venezia.
