Venice is introducing a new system to discourage day-trippers in hopes of curbing problems with over-tourism in the popular hotspot. After years of discussing a possible “tourist tax,” the city of Venice has confirmed it will make day-trippers pay from €3 to €10 for access to the city centre starting on January 16, 2023. Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said the goal of the new tourism fee is to discourage day tourism at certain times of the year and encourage overnight tourism. Day-trippers will have to pay a fee, but those who stay overnight continue only to have to pay the city tax of €2 to €5, according to a government press release. “We are the first in the world to introduce this system, and we are aware that not everything will work well from the beginning, but we will be ready to improve in the course of work. We want to guarantee the tourist the best quality of the visit and make sure that the city is able to give visitors all the services they need,” said Tourism Secretary Simone Venturini. 

Dal 16 gennaio 2023, la città di Venezia applicherà ai turisti che vorranno visitare la città per un solo giorno una tassa da euro 3 ad euro 10. Venezia è una città fragile ma molto affollata di turisti e il comune di Venezia ha deciso di creare questa “tourist tax” per scoraggiare i turisti di un solo giorno. Il sindaco, Luigi Brugnaro, ha dichiarato che con questa iniziativa vuole incoraggiare il turismo di qualità, quello di chi decide di passare qualche giorno a Venezia. Attualmente, i turisti che alloggiano a Venezia pagano una tassa di soggiorno da euro 2 ad euro 5. Simone Venturini che è parte dal Turismo del Comune di Venezia, ha detto che la città è la prima ad avere questa tassa ed è consapevole che potrà creare qualche problema. Ha anche detto che vogliono dare un’esperienza di alta qualità ma che, contemporaneamente, il “tourist tax” servirà a rispettare la città.
