Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa e Fort Meyers, in Florida.
Spirit Airlines CEO Bob Fornaro came to Ohio recently to kick-off the carrier’s new Akron-Canton nonstop routes to Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Meyers, FL. The routes are already offered at Cleveland Hopkins International and Fornaro believes Northeast Ohio travelers can support both.
Fornaro called the Akron-Canton Airport the best small airport in the country and says they will add new flights to Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach in April. Fornaro, Spirit Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer since January, says he “wants to provide low fares with a good reputation.” Spirit is the lowest cost operator in the U.S. airline industry and its low fee structure remains stable.
The carrier has been called the “fast food” alternative, think “McDonald’s in the sky,” to mainline airlines and fighting off its reputation has been a problem. “Cheap fares shouldn’t equate to lousy service. Getting passengers to their destinations on time and keeping aircrafts clean are the basics that Spirit must get right,” Fornaro said. He predicts, by next year, Spirit flights will be on time 75-80 percent of the time - just below the Delta and Alaska airline companies.
