As one of the worst heatwaves in decades swept across southeast Europe, more than 800 wildfires have devastated Italy, Spain, Greece, and Turkey. In early August, tourists were evacuated after fires burned a pine forest near a beach in Pescara, Italy. About 800 people were evacuated from their homes, including a convent of nuns, after a wildfire broke out in the 131-acre Pineta Dannunziana nature reserve. With temperatures rising above 104F, the EU stated that this year’s fire season has been significantly more destructive than average.
